Tarsar Sonmos Trek

Tarsar Marsar is a famous world trek to two beautiful alpine lakes which have been popular since 20th century. Some people have visited them over three generations and the waters of Tarsar lake flow in the famous life line of Kashmir- the Lidder river.
Itinerary

Day 1

Pickup from Srinagar and drive to Aru (3hours), stay overnight in Camps

Day 2

Aru - Lidderwat 

Altitude: 2,783 m
Distance: 10km
  • The trek begins from Aru. It’s a moderate trek with mild ascents and descents leading to a beautiful camping meadow, Lidderwat. The trek has a mix of both forests and meadows, and it runs parallel to the shimmering Lidder River.

Day 3

Lidderwat – Shekwas 

Altitude: 3,365 m
Distance: 5.6 km

  • It’s again a mild trek day with few descents taking into pristine grassland. The again runs parallel to the Lidder Valley and ends in the beautiful Shekwas Valley.

Day 4

Shekwas - Tarsar 

Altitude: 3,794 m 
Distance: 5 km


  • The third day of trek takes us near Tarsar Lake, an almond shaped alpine lake. The lake is overlooked by mighty mountain peaks like Kolahoi peak. The trail passes through few ridges which give a bird’s view of the area around. Before reaching and camping near Tarsar Lake, one has to ford a stream strewn with boulders and rocks.

Day 5

Tarsar Lake - Sundersar 

Altitude: 3,946 m 
Distance: 5 km

  • To reach Sundersar Lake one has to pass over the Tarsar Pass, trek through grasslands, streams and meadows. The day will have much diversity in landscape. The trail also passes through the beautiful Verdant Valley.

Day 6

Sundersar -Marsar - Sonmasti 

Altitude: 3,292 m 
Distance: 8 km

  • The trail is tricky with some gradient. One reaches Sonmasti via Marsar Lake, a twin-sister of Tarsar Lake. The Marsar Lake connects with Dachigam National Park and drains its waters through this park into Dal Lake.  All along the trail, the views are scenic and pristine with.

Day 7

Sonmasti - Sumbal 

Altitude: 2,000 m
Distance: 8 km

  • The trail is mostly descent along shimmering streams. On the way one sees shepherds herding their cattle and small huts and nomad houses dotting the trail.

    As we reach Sumbal, the cars will ferry us to Srinagar.
